Best Dental Chairs for Your New Office: A Contractor’s Installation Guide

Choosing a dental chair is one of the biggest equipment decisions you’ll make for your practice. But most comparison articles are written by people who sell chairs. This one is written by someone who installs them. After building out dental offices across NYC, Westchester, and Long Island — and completing factory training from the major manufacturers — here’s what I’ve learned about the four brands you’ll most likely be choosing between in the U.S. market.

Why Your Contractor’s Opinion on Chairs Matters

When dentists compare chairs, they sit in them at a trade show and think about comfort and ergonomics. That matters. But the chair is only part of the story. Every chair connects to your building through plumbing (water supply, vacuum, compressed air, drain), electrical circuits, and data lines. The location and specifications of these connections differ between manufacturers. If your contractor doesn’t know the specific rough-in requirements for your chair, you’ll pay for that mistake when the chair arrives and doesn’t line up.

Here are the four dental chair brands I encounter most frequently in the tri-state area, compared from both a clinical and construction standpoint.

A-dec

Founded 1964 · Newberg, Oregon · Family-owned · Used in 80%+ of U.S. dental schools

A-dec is the benchmark. When other manufacturers design chairs, they’re measuring themselves against A-dec. The A-dec 500 is one of the most installed dental chairs in North America, and for good reason — it’s built to run for decades with minimal maintenance.

Installation Perspective: A-dec provides the best installation documentation I’ve worked with. Their rough-in guides include exact measurements for water, vacuum, air, drain, and electrical connections. The modular design means individual components can be serviced or replaced without disassembling the entire unit. When I follow A-dec’s specs precisely, the chair drops right into place during final installation. Parts availability is excellent — you can get A-dec parts anywhere in the country within 24-48 hours.

✓ Strengths

Unmatched build quality and longevity

Best installation documentation in the industry

Modular design simplifies future repairs

Excellent parts availability nationwide

Strong resale value (matters if you sell your practice)

✗ Considerations

Highest price point

Digital ecosystem not as deep as Dentsply Sirona

Premium pricing may strain startup budgets

Best for: Dentists who want buy-it-for-life equipment with proven reliability, strong resale value, and the easiest service experience long-term.

Midmark

Founded 1915 · Versailles, Ohio · Originally a concrete mixer company · Now a dental equipment leader

Midmark is the best value proposition in dental chairs. Their Elevance and UltraComfort lines offer solid clinical performance at the lowest price point of the major U.S. brands. They’ve also become a leader in sustainability — their hydraulic systems use significantly less energy than competitors.

Installation Perspective: Midmark is the most contractor-friendly equipment I install. The rough-in tolerances are the most forgiving of any major brand, which is a real advantage when working in older NYC and Westchester buildings where existing plumbing isn’t perfectly positioned. Components are the most accessible for service — you don’t need to disassemble half the chair to reach a valve. If you’re building in a space with imperfect existing infrastructure, Midmark’s flexibility can save you thousands in plumbing rework.

✓ Strengths

Most affordable major U.S. brand

Most forgiving installation tolerances

Easiest to service and maintain

Strong clinical ergonomics

Excellent cleanability features

✗ Considerations

Fewer high-end customization options

Not as premium a feel as A-dec

Smaller product range than competitors

Best for: Startup practices watching their budget, renovations in older buildings where plumbing flexibility matters, and dentists who want reliable equipment without paying premium prices.

Dentsply Sirona

Merged 2016 · Charlotte, NC · World’s largest dental product manufacturer · 16,000+ employees

Dentsply Sirona is the technology play. If you’re building a digital-first practice with CEREC, CAD/CAM, and integrated workflows, their chairs are designed to plug into that ecosystem seamlessly. The Teneo is their premium line, while the Intego offers a more accessible entry point with many of the same digital capabilities.

Installation Perspective: Dentsply Sirona chairs require more planning during the rough-in phase because of their digital integration. You’re not just running water and air — you need to plan for data connections, additional electrical circuits for integrated screens and digital systems, and sometimes network infrastructure that connects the chair to the practice’s CAD/CAM workflow. The installation is more involved, but the result is a fully connected operatory. Requires a contractor who understands both the plumbing and the digital infrastructure.

✓ Strengths

Deepest digital workflow integration (CEREC, Primescan)

AI-powered positioning features on premium models

Comprehensive ecosystem — chairs, imaging, CAD/CAM

Large service network

✗ Considerations

Most complex installation due to digital integration

Higher cost for premium models with full features

Ecosystem can feel “locked in” to Sirona products

Service may require certified Sirona technicians

Best for: Tech-forward dentists building fully digital practices with CEREC or other Sirona digital workflows. Practices that want chair, imaging, and CAD/CAM from a single ecosystem.

Belmont (Takara Belmont)

Founded 1921 · Osaka, Japan · U.S. operations: Somerset, NJ · Known for Japanese precision engineering

Belmont is the sleeper pick that many dentists overlook. Their Clesta and Eurus lines offer Japanese precision engineering at a price point below A-dec and Dentsply Sirona. The chairs are known for whisper-quiet motorized bases, excellent patient comfort, and remarkably smooth motion. Belmont has a strong following in Asia and Europe, and a growing presence in North America.

Installation Perspective: Belmont chairs have well-documented installation requirements and straightforward mechanical systems. The connection points are logical and the documentation is clear, though not quite as comprehensive as A-dec’s. The motorized base is one of the smoothest and quietest in the industry — patients notice this. From a serviceability standpoint, the mechanical components are reliable and built to Japanese quality standards. Parts are available through their Somerset, NJ distribution center.

✓ Strengths

Excellent value — Japanese quality at mid-range pricing

Whisper-quiet motorized base

Superb patient comfort and smooth motion

Strong infection control features

20+ year build quality

✗ Considerations

Less brand recognition in the U.S. than A-dec/Midmark

Smaller U.S. dealer network than domestic brands

Limited digital ecosystem integration

Best for: Dentists who want premium build quality and patient comfort at a mid-range price. Practices that value quiet operation and smooth mechanics over digital ecosystem integration.

Contractor’s Tip: Whichever chair brand you choose, finalize your selection BEFORE construction starts. Every manufacturer has different rough-in specifications — connection point locations, plumbing sizes, electrical requirements. If your contractor starts the rough-in before you’ve chosen your chair, you’re gambling with $15,000-$40,000 in potential rework costs. Bring your chair manufacturer’s installation guide to your first meeting with your contractor.

The Contractor’s Summary

All four brands make excellent dental chairs. The right choice depends on your priorities:

A-dec if you want the best long-term investment with proven reliability and the easiest service experience.

Midmark if you’re a startup watching your budget or building in an older space where plumbing flexibility matters.

Dentsply Sirona if you’re building a digital-first practice and want your chair integrated with CEREC and other Sirona digital workflows.

Belmont if you want Japanese precision and premium patient comfort at a mid-range price point.

What matters most from a construction standpoint is that your contractor knows your chair’s specific installation requirements before the first pipe is run.
